Barun Valley Trek With MBC

Spectacular scenery and diverse landscapes will leave you breathless. Cascading waterfalls, deep gorges, lush vegetation and arid rocky moonscape type terrain at higher altitudes are waiting for you. The 46km long Barun Valley is a picturesque remote location at the base of Mt. Makalu (8481m) – the world’s fifth-highest peak. It is entirely within the boundary of the Makalu Barun National Park, a 1500 sq.km sanctuary in the eastern region of Nepal. It extends all the way to Sagarmatha National Park (Mt Everest National Park). Its lower reaches are in a sub-tropical terrain in the Arun River extending all the way to the Tibetan plateau. The Barun River, a tributary of the Arun River, flows through the valley and in winter becomes a glacier. The indigenous Limbu people refer to the Barun River as Chukchuwa.

The Makalu Barun area is abundant with unique flora and fauna, such as the colorful Rhododendron trees with their pink flowers and wild orchids. If you are lucky you may also glimpse the elusive snow leopard, red panda, wild pigs, musk deer, yak, and the Himalayan Thar. The area is also home to more than 420 species of birds, some only found in Nepal.

The Barun Valley trek begins at Tumlingtar and passes through numerous villages along the Barun River Valley and crosses some high altitude passes like Shipton La Pass (4220m), Keke La Pass I(4150m) and to the dark blue Kalipokhri Lake. The highest elevation on this trek is to Makalu Base Camp (5000m).

Itinerary

From the time you arrive in Kathmandu, the capital and cultural city of Nepal, we will be there at the airport to greet you and take you to your hotel.

Today we will spend about three to four hours travelling, starting out by flying to Tumlingtar followed by a road trip to the Gurung settlement of Chichira where we will stay the night

We will start relatively early as we have a six to seven-hour trek ahead of us. The trail takes us through some quaint and distinctly different villages with views over forests and mountains until we reach Num situated high on a ridge. We will stay here overnight.

Today we descend and pass by the terraced fields and through the forest until we reach the Barun River. After crossing and re-crossing the river we will enter the Makalu Barun National Park where we have to register and obtain a permit. We then continue until we reach Seduwa where we will stay the night.

Our four to five hour trek begins by following the trail down to Kasuwa Khola (river) and then across the hills passing through rice fields until we reach the eye-catching village of Tashi Gaon and great views of the Himalayas.

The trail today begins with a climb to Chipla Village perched on top of the ridge. We then head through the forest until we reach Kharka Village (2900m) and further on to the village of Unshisha. We then climb stone stairs until we reach Dhara Kharka, a small grazing land at the top of the ridge. We then descend to Kahuma Danda Village where we stay the night.

Today we have a rest day where we can catch up on laundry and explore the surrounding area and absorb the natural beauty of the place. We stay here overnight.

On the trail today we get to see the twin peaks of Chamlang, Peak 6, and Peak 7. From the top of the ridge, we ascend a stone path arriving at a small lake. Continuing on we reach Kike La Pass (4127m). After the pass, we head down through a rhododendron forest to Mumbuk Village where we stay the night.

The trail and trek today of about six to seven hours leads down a steep descent through a narrow valley and then crosses the Barun Khola (river) near Tamatan Kharka. We follow the river bank until we reach the summer settlement of Yangri Kharka.

Today the trail takes us across a wooden bridge over the Barun River and then trek across a rocky river bed and past a prayer wall until we arrive at Sherson where we can see the lower Barun glacier and the soaring splendid Mt. Makalu. This is the lower base camp of Mt. Makalu. There are some amazing views from here of Makalu’s south face and Mt. Baruntse (7220m). We will set up camp for the night at Sherson.

We cross an area strewn with boulders before reaching the base camp situated on the west bank of the river. From here we have awesome views of Makalu’s south face, Mt Everest, Baruntse, Peaks 6 & 7 and Lhotse. This is surely a highlight of the journey.

Today we can soak up the feeling of having journeyed to such a high altitude and take in the sights around Makalu Base Camp. It is a harsh arid rocky terrain with Barun Glacier just above it. From here we can see the south face of Makalu and a panorama view of Mt.Everest and Mt. Lhotse. We will stay the night at Makalu Base Camp.

Today we return on the same trail back to Nhe Kharka where we will stay the night.

Heading through Rhododendron and pine forest we head to Mumbuk, arriving in time to see the sunset over the mountains. We will stay here overnight.

Leaving Mumbuk, we trek across the Shipton La Pass and descend to Kauma Village where we stay the night.

Today we descend to Tashi Gaon arriving in plenty of time that will allow us to relax and unwind from being at higher altitudes.

The trail today heads through cultivated fields and then reaches the Ipsuwa Khola (river). Here we cross a suspension bridge and break for lunch.Trek to Balung.

We have a short trek today, firstly arriving at the Rai village of Walung (880m) and then cross the Apsawa Khola (river) and climb up to Chhayang Village, another Rai settlement. From here we head to Parangbu Village and on to Pukuwa (550m) where we will camp the night.

Today we head to the village of Tome and then further down into the Arun Valley along the banks of the Sankhuwa Khola (river) and finally to the Chhetri village of Bumling where we stay the night.

On our final day trekking, we follow the river downstream to where it meets the Arun River and walk along its east bank past Chyawabesi Village and then climb back up the Tumlingtar plateau and head to the hotel where we will stay overnight.

Today we have a scenic flight back to Kathmandu and can look back at the mountains that have been home for over two weeks. After we arrive at Kathmandu we can either relax at our hotel or wander around Thamel to do some final shopping.

In this day our company representative will take you to the airport approximately 3 hours before your scheduled flight.
